If the book you are reading:

  • Promises radical change in one’s personal life or relationships,
  • Is based on a (usually quite true) principle which is blown up to greater significance than it deserves,
  • Presents quick fixes, usually in a short time (1 week, 3 weeks, 40 days) or via a number of steps,
  • Suggests something can be achieved with little effort (“just 10 minutes a day”),
  • Is endorsed only by other authors of the self-help genre,
  • Has an author who is described as an guru,
  • Purports to contain “secrets” of “experts,”
  • Claims to have helped millions

Then you are probably reading a self-help book.
